Corporate Spotlight: Coca-Cola Beverages Northeast

From the start of the early 1900s, the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Providence, Rhode Island and Providence College (founded in 1917) have been neighborhood fixtures for over a century in Providence. The partnership grew in the mid-1990s when the bottling company became part of Coca-Cola Beverages Northeast. As the College’s beverage vendor, Coca-Cola believed that its role was to be more than a soda and performance drink vendor, they were committed to being a partner with Providence College.

Tim Danahy, corporate channel & segment manager, Coca-Cola Beverages Northeast, proudly shared:

Our relationship with PC (Providence College) is a true friendship. We are partners with PC’s family and PC is a part of Coca-Cola’s. Far and away, I can say that this is the best relationship (Coca-Cola Beverages Northeast) has with any college in the country.

Mr. Danahy shared that the partnership grew once both organizations realized that it shared a common goal…the highest level of recruitment. In the same way that PC takes great strides to recruit the brightest minds and best athletes, Coca-Cola recruits the best promotional materials, equipment (freestyle machines) and products to improve athletic performance (PowerAde, Core Power) in its efforts to secure customer loyalty and brand recognition.

Coca-Cola’s connection with PC Athletics blossomed as the PC Friars men’s hockey team won its NCAA national championship in 2015 and the men’s basketball team qualified for the Sweet 16 in the annual NCAA basketball tournament in 1997 and again in 2022. Mr. Danahy recalled that during the 2015 run to the hockey championship, Men’s Hockey Coach Nate Leaman’s mantra to his team was that they were the strongest and most well-prepared team for three periods. They also drank PowerAde.

The relationship truly rocketed in 2023 when Coca-Cola Beverages Northeast strove to secure a vendor relationship with the University of Buffalo, who had been a client of its top competitor for over 17 years. Mr. Danahy approached Steve Napolillo, athletic director, and John Sweeney, senior vice president for finance and business/chief financial officer, to provide a video testimonial advocating how the benefits of a partnership with Coca-Cola helped Providence College. Mr. Napolillo, Mr. Sweeney, and Coach Kim English prepared a testimonial that tipped the scales for Coca-Cola Beverages Northeast to add the University of Buffalo as its beverage supplier. Mr. Danahy added:

It allowed us to prove that we are an engaged partner…University at Buffalo is so pleased with their partnership with Coca-Cola that we asked them to do a similar testimonial for us for our bid to land the Syracuse University partnership.

Mr. Joseph Maggiacomo, general manager of the Coca-Cola Beverages Northeast distribution center in Providence, grew up in the Elmhurst area in the shadow of Providence College and grew up as a PC Friars fan. He stated:

Over the years, I’ve witnessed how this partnership is rooted not just in business, but in a shared commitment to the community and the values we hold in common. From supporting campus events to cheering on the Friars at pivotal moments, our collaboration has gone beyond delivering beverages—it has helped forge connections and create lasting memories for students, alumni, and local families. Seeing Providence College thrive both on and off the court has always been a source of pride for our entire team.

Mr. Maggiacomo further shared another component of the relationship:

Providence College and the Athletic Department were an integral part in Coca-Cola securing the Providence Convention Center and AMP (Amica Mutual Pavilion, the home arena for the Providence Friars men’s basketball team) in a multi-year agreement…They spoke about our execution of our brands and connection with the school supporting student activities, promotional events and the excitement we help create during the year…This is what true partnership looks like.

Mr. Danahy agreed, “We hope the relationship continues well beyond the present relationship we have now. Thanks and, as always, GO FRIARS!”

The longstanding partnership between Coca-Cola Beverages Northeast and Providence College has evolved into a dynamic and mutually beneficial relationship rooted in shared values, community engagement, and commitment to excellence. From supporting campus activities and athletic achievements to serving as a model for successful collaborations with other institutions, Coca-Cola’s dedication goes far beyond supplying beverages. The testimonials and experiences from both organizations demonstrate that their alliance fosters pride, enhances student life, and strengthens the local community, with both sides hopeful that this fruitful relationship will continue for years to come.
