Rhode Island Foundation Grant Supports PC Pre-College Program
Providence College received a $10,000 grant from the 1829 Legacy Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation this past September. This award supports Pathways to College, an early college program designed to introduce rising high school juniors and seniors to higher education. Designed by the School of Education and Social Work and Mount Pleasant High School’s Teacher Academy in Providence, RI, this five-week summer program provides students with firsthand college experience, preparing them for academic success beyond high school. Throughout the program, students immerse themselves in for-credit coursework, gaining valuable skills in writing for college success, college readiness, and education.
Under the guidance of Providence College faculty and the expertise of Yune Tran, Ph.D., dean of the School of Education and Social Work, students build confidence in their abilities and explore their identities as future educators and professionals.
“The School of Education and Social Work is incredibly grateful for the support provided by the Rhode Island Foundation to be able to continue the Pathways to College program,” said Tran. “The potential to transform the lives of marginalized youth by providing them with access to early college on the PC (Providence College) campus and high-quality education enhances their academic and personal development while reducing equity gaps. To us, this is what education is all about.”
Outside of the classroom, students experience daily life on a college campus — dining in the cafeteria, interacting with current college students, and discovering the many resources available to support their success. We are eager to welcome students on campus for this summer’s Pathways to College program.
